Post Operative rehabilitation
Orthopaedics - Joint replacement
Joint
replacements are commonly total hip replacements or total knee replacements
or resurfacings. Other joints such as elbow and shoulders are also sometimes
totally replaced and are treated at the clinic.
We aim to assess, treat and thereby improve the movement and functional capabilities of patients following joint replacement.
What is involved in the assessment?
Each patient will receive
an assessment so treatment plans can be specifically tailored to each individuals
needs and personal goals.
The assessment review the new joints range of movement, muscle strength, quality of movement, walking pattern and functional abilities relative to pre-operative status.
What treatment is involved?
Treatment sessions focus on addressing
the needs highlighted by the initial assessment and will be constantly reviewed
as your abilities improve.
Treatments commonly include
Treatment can also address, as appropriate, any specific goal you have for yourself and your new joint.
All exercises can be adapted for the land or hydrotherapy pool, as appropriate to each individuals needs.
How
often can I expect to have physiotherapy treatment?
Treatments are usually
two half hour sessions per day - one morning and one afternoon session.
If you are having hydrotherapy, one session will be in the pool and the
other in the gym. If hydrotherapy is not suitable for you, both sessions
will be in the gym.
Walking aids?
As you progress, you may need to change your
walking aid. Progression is usually made from a walking frame to elbow crutches
to walking sticks. As you progress you may loan our equipment. We can also
supply you with walking aids that you may require to take home.
What happens when I go home?
You will be given an exercise
programme to continue with at home.
If you require further physiotherapy and you live in our area you can return to our department for follow up appointments as an outpatient. If you live further away, follow up physiotherapy at a location convenient for you can be organised and written physiotherapy report provided for your new therapist.
