Neurological rehabilitation

Neurology: Stoke - CVA

Stroke and CVA (Cerebral Vascular Accident) are different names for the same condition and describe damage to the brain resulting in loss of movement and ability on one side of the body.

We aim to assess, treat and thereby improve the movement and functional capabilities of patients following a stroke.

What is involved in the assessment?
Each patient will receive an assessment so treatment plans can be specifically tailored to each individuals needs and personal goals.

The assessment reviews active movement (motor) performance of each limb, muscle tone, sensory deficits, compensations, contractures and balance. These will be assessed against the functional movement abilities of each individual.

What treatment is involved?
Treatment sessions focus on addressing the needs highlighted by the initial assessment and will be constantly reviewed as your abilities improve.

Treatments commonly include:

Treatment can also address, as appropriate, any specific goal you have for yourself to ensure a safe move back home.

Most sessions can will take place either in your room or the physiotherapy gym. The hydrotherapy pool is occasionally used for relaxation or global muscle strengthening if appropriate for the individuals needs.

How often can I expect to have physiotherapy treatment?
Treatments are usually two half hour sessions per day. One morning and one afternoon session. These can be increased or reduced as required.

What other members of the team are available?

Other team members include:

Walking aids and equipment?

As you progress, you may need to change your walking aid. Progression can be made from walking frame to elbow crutches to walking sticks.

As you progress you may loan our equipment. We can also supply you with walking aids that you may require to take home.

We are able to order other specific equipment for you as it is required.

What happens when I go home?
You will be given an exercise programme to continue with at home.

If you require further physiotherapy and you live in our area you can return to our department for follow up appointments as an outpatient. If you live further away, follow up physiotherapy at a location convenient for you can be organised and written physiotherapy report provided for your new therapist.
