Stress And Music Bed Therapy
The human body is not designed for constant low level stress
associated with modern complex lifestyles. It is designed for the well known
“fight or flight” survival response in brief life threatening
situations. Escape and relief from survival threat can transform distress
into “eustress”, a term coined by famed stress researcher Dr.
Hans Selye.
Unfortunately high achievers have learned to depend upon the “fight or flight” response on a daily basis (motivation by deadlines, using sugar or coffee as a “kick-start” and depending upon adrenalin rush) as an operating norm. Today’s achievers don’t even know how relaxation occurs. Treated purely as a passive experience, incomplete relaxation occurs “by accident”. Teeth grinding during sleep, jaw muscles are capable of exerting forty pounds of pressure, too many people awaken feeling more tired than they went to bed.
Stress thoughts produce muscle contraction, laughter causes muscle expansion (a relaxed muscle). Worry often becomes “embodied thought” expressed in muscle spasm until the concern is resolved or until “laughter breaks the tension”. As shown in a study at the University of Pennsylvania, such “embodied stress” can cost you your life. In post mortem exams of death between the ages of fifty and sixty, the study showed individual glands or organs had “aged at a radically different rate”. The cause appeared to be stress related constriction of the “life line” to the deteriorated gland or organ.
